The Asia-Pacific region is ageing rapidly. The percentage of people aged 60 years or over will increase from 13.6 per cent in 2020 to 24.9 per cent in 2050. These demographic shifts present challenges and opportunities that require forward-looking policies to ensure inclusive and active ageing. In 2002, United Nations Member States adopted the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA), the global action plan to “build societies for all ages”.

International migration is an important multidimensional reality of major relevance for sustainable development to countries of origin, transit and destination in Asia and the Pacific. In 2019, there were almost 65 million international migrants in the Asia-Pacific region. Almost 106 million migrants from ESCAP countries were living outside their countries of birth, nearly 40 per cent of all the migrants in the world.

Climate change and population ageing are two megatrends affecting the Asia-Pacific region. According to the estimates by the UNESCAP Asia-Pacific Disaster Report in 2019, the Asia and Pacific region has its annual loss of $675 billion due to climate-induced disasters.
Observance of International Migrants Day 2020
The observance of International Migrants Day 2020 in Asia and the Pacific is co-organized by ESCAP, the Regional United Nations Network on Migration and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh. It will feature the launch of the Asia-Pacific Migration Report 2020, the first comprehensive UN system-wide assessment of the implementation of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in Asia and the Pacific.
