Countries across the Asia-Pacific region are experiencing rapid population ageing. The number of older persons sixty years or over is expected to increase from an estimated 630 million in 2020 to almost 1.3 billion by 2050. By then, one in four people in the region are expected to be over 60 years old.
Committee on Social Development, Sixth Session
The sixth session of the Committee on Social Development was conducted from 20 to 21 October 2020. Over the two days, the Committee deliberated on policy solutions to extend comprehensive and inclusive social protection and achieve international and regional commitments on population and development.

Expert Group Meeting on the Asia-Pacific Migration Report 2020
ESCAP and the United Nations Regional Network on Migration for Asia and the Pacific are organizing an expert group meeting for academics, practitioners and other stakeholders to provide feedback on the draft Asia-Pacific Migration Report 2020. The report is prepared by ESCAP and the Regional United Nations Network on Migration for Asia and the Pacific in preparation for the Asia-Pacific Regional Review of Implementation of the Global Compact for Migration, scheduled for November 2020.
Older persons, communities and COVID-19
As COVID-19 continues to cause untold damage across the world, it is increasingly apparent that older persons are severely affected. Those aged 60 years and above infected with Covid-19 have a substantially greater risk of dying of the disease, and those over 80 are dying at five times the average rate. In addition, approximately 66 per cent of individuals aged 70 years and over suffer from at least one underlying condition, which raises their overall risk of developing severe symptoms.

The Asia-Pacific Forum to Empower Youth to Achieve the SDGs - part of a series of youth exchange activities involving collaboration between ESCAP, UNDP and the Urban Youth Academy - took place over the period 5 to 18 January 2020.The Thailand Social Innovation Platform was a partner in the event, which was initiated at the UNCC with various presentations including ESCAPs work on the demographic dividend with a gender dimension.
