Regional Commissions Side Event on the margins of the 61st session of the Commission for Social Development - Leaving No One Behind at the Regional Level: Adopting an Age-Sensitive Lens to Policymaking
Population ageing is a global and regional megatrend, presenting opportunities and challenges to sustainable development. In 2021 and 2022, Regional Commissions supported member States in reviewing national policies and programmes on population ageing. They organized regional reviews and appraisals, bringing together member States and non-government stakeholders to discuss achievements, lessons learned, emerging issues and gaps in policy implementation.
Commemoration of International Day of Older Persons 2022
ESCAP commemorated the International Day of Older Persons on 30 September 2022, 12.00-13.45, Bangkok time. This year’s theme is “The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women in Asia and the Pacific.” ESCAP organized a special event consisting of a presentation on the situation of the region’s older women and an expert panel discussion. The Committee on Social Development, Seventh Session was held at the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok from 6 to 8 September 2022. Expert Group Meeting - Population Ageing and the Situation of Older Persons in Asia and the Pacific: Follow-up to the Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on the Fourth Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing
Population ageing is a global and regional megatrend. In 2020, sixty per cent of the world’s older persons resided in the region, or some 630 million persons 60 years or over. By 2050, it is projected that one quarter of the population of Asia and the Pacific will be older, some 1.3 billion people. Population ageing presents challenges and opportunities to older persons and their families and affects all aspects of the societies in which they live. It is an important multidimensional reality of major relevance for sustainable development.

Harnessing Intergenerational Benefits of Demographic Change in Asia and the Pacific: Engaging all Groups from Youth to Older Persons
The Asia-Pacific region is demographically diverse. Some countries have youth bulges, many others are experiencing population ageing at an unprecedented pace. Sooner or later, all countries will experience population ageing, and hence, even countries with youthful populations can benefit from understanding the dynamics of population ageing in order to plan forward-looking policies that address age structure changes in the immediate and longer-term future. In this context and as part of preparations for the Asia-Pacific Intergovernmental Meeting on the Fourth Review and Appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, to be held from 29 June to 1 July 2022, ESCAP is organizing a regional expert forum on “Harnessing Intergenerational Benefits of Demographic Change in Asia and the Pacific: Engaging all Groups from Youth to Older Persons”, on 22 June 2022.
