ESCAP provides the most inclusive platform for governments to meet and discuss social development issues in Asia and the Pacific. It also organizes expert group meetings, capacity-building workshops and related events.

In 2023, one in seven people are aged 60 years or older in Asia and the Pacific. By 2050, one in four people are projected to belong to this age group. In Malaysia, about 12 per cent of the total population are currently 60 years or older. By 2040, that number is projected to increase to about 18 per cent.

Population ageing is a global and regional megatrend, presenting opportunities and challenges to sustainable development. In 2021 and 2022, Regional Commissions supported member States in reviewing national policies and programmes on population ageing. They organized regional reviews and appraisals, bringing together member States and non-government stakeholders to discuss achievements, lessons learned, emerging issues and gaps in policy implementation.

Commemoration of International Day of Older Persons 2022

ESCAP commemorated the International Day of Older Persons on 30 September 2022, 12.00-13.45, Bangkok time. This year’s theme is “The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women in Asia and the Pacific.” ESCAP organized a special event consisting of a presentation on the situation of the region’s older women and an expert panel discussion.
