Joint Expert Group Meeting on Older Persons and Intergenerational Solidarity
The Social Development Division of ESCAP and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) will co-organize a Joint Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the “Older Persons and Intergenerational Solidarity” which will take place at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok from 10-11 October 2023.
International Day of Older Persons in Asia and the Pacific, 2023
In 2023, an estimated 697 million older persons (60 years or over) are residing in Asia and the Pacific, representing about 60 per cent of all older persons in the world. Roughly one in 7 persons in the region are currently 60 years or older, and by 2050, there will be one in 4 persons belonging to this age cohort. Women account for about 54 per cent of all older women.
Strengthening older persons’ labour force participation and benefitting from the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Asia and the Pacific: Regional Workshop
By 2050, the number of older persons in Asia and the Pacific is projected to double, with one in four people being aged 60 or older. The prevalence of ageing populations across the region, along with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, COVID-19 and environmental changes, will impact the labour force, necessitating investment in skills development, planning for employment shifts and ensuring age-friendly work environments.
Expert Group Meeting Asia-Pacific Population and Development Report 2023
The Social Development Division of ESCAP and the Asia Pacific Regional Office of UNFPA co-organized an Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on the “Asia-Pacific Population and Development Report 2023” which took place at the United Nations Conference Center in Bangkok from 13 to 14 June 2023.
Strengthening older persons’ labour force participation and benefitting from the Fourth Industrial Revolution in Asia and the Pacific: Malaysia National Workshop
In 2023, one in seven people are aged 60 years or older in Asia and the Pacific. By 2050, one in four people are projected to belong to this age group. In Malaysia, about 12 per cent of the total population are currently 60 years or older. By 2040, that number is projected to increase to about 18 per cent.

In 2020, there were almost 18 million international migrants residing in North and Central Asia, and over 21 million migrants from the subregion were residing outside their countries of birth.
