All countries in the Asia-Pacific region are ageing rapidly: the median age has increased in all countries in the region, even in those countries that are considered as having a primarily young population. Population ageing is one of the megatrends affecting sustainable development in the Asia-Pacific region. In the region, the number of older persons is expected to increase from an estimated 548 million in 2019 to nearly 1.3 billion by 2050. By then, one in four people in the region is expected to be over 60 years old.
